His Ways

duplications or distributions made:
terrible like the Amazon storm,
cyclic and timeless like the River Nile
and secret like a Tibetan valley
winds and pierces the seed of the thorn,
and forms a white rose,
a sweet odor, displayed from the end
of a daggered stem.
No guess at His intent
does justice to the route,
a straight line drawn through chaos,
brightness and clarity beyond comprehension,
hissing through the darkness,
clapping and flashing,
searing trees and bridges in two
if they stand in defiance.
Tame yourself with the knife
or just silence if you have it in you to abstain.
In the absence of that part of you which
wants to triumph, as you step aside,
God will build in straw and mud
an unsinkable ship by which you can escape
or lower you to safety with a fine cotton thread
able to extract a glacier from the sea.
