Every Dream

Every dream lost or forgotten
Is a limb amputated and discarded
Leaving grotesques gaping wounds
That never triumph over infection.

Every word of desire not spoken
Is a sword passing across the soul
Leaving slices of love and hope out
To be taken by scavengers.

Every distracted intention
Is a moment to allow
Another run of razor wire across
The fence-top of a self-made prison.

Every compromised ideal
Is spittle in the face of those
Who sacrificed and suffered
To raise in bloody victory a golden thread.
