Deep Change

Deep change is uncomfortable.
Shallow change is not change at all.
Endings and beginnings make new,
And the dull middle raises them as flags,
Twisting in the storm that learning is,
Breaking away from dry land
And the docks with their knotty wood.

It is like kite flying without a string.
It is like diving with eyes closed.
It is like marching past the half way point.

The undoing of a warm presence
Breaks at the heart and sweeps away warmth,
But only for a moment among years.
The ending of one part in a sharing of thoughts
Is the beginning of another.
We cannot go it alone for long.
Our soul will find an oasis again.
